Replacing the Transport Fleet Brings Savings, Optimism

One mpg doesn’t sound like a whole lot on its own. But when you consider a 324-truck fleet traveling hundreds of thousands of miles every year, one mpg improvement per truck adds up – in both fuel and environmental costs.

Chrysler Group LLC is considering those costs closely as it works to replace its entire Transport fleet trucks. The trucks deliver parts from suppliers—mostly from the company’s stamping and powertrain plants, but also from some outside suppliers—to Manufacturing’s assembly plants and Mopar®’s parts distribution centers. The group operates terminals in Detroit, Toledo, Ohio, and Windsor, Ontario.

DOE Secretary Views Electric 500

The parade of federal officials taking a close look at green machines at the Washington Auto Show continued on Thursday.  Secretary of Energy Steven Chu spent some time with us viewing an electric concept version of the Fiat 500. He was joined by Dave McCurdy, President and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

Readers of this blog probably are aware of Chrysler Group's goal to improve fuel economy by 25% overall by 2014. This, as Ron Burgundy might say, is kind of a big deal. And if I may say so, it's kind of an overlooked story here at the Detroit Auto Show.

LaHood 'Impressed' With Rapid Change at Chrysler

 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood helped open the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this morning with some words of praise for Chrysler Group LLC and its future. Secretary LaHood said he was "very impressed," with all of the Detroit-based automakers, but especially with the innovative management and enthusiasm of employees developing new products and fuel efficent vehicles at Chrysler.

Marchionne's Announcement of the GEMA Investment

Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne announces the company's $179 million investment in the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA), based in Dundee, MI, to produce a 1.4-liter engine.
