Response to Fox News Story Regarding Jefferson North Assembly Workers
by Scott Garberding
We’ve seen a fair bit of social media discussion regarding the return to work of 13 Chrysler Group LLC employees who were dismissed from their jobs at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit. We took that action after a September 2010 local news report exposed the workers’ off-duty conduct.
The workers followed the grievance procedure process outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Chrysler and the United Auto Workers. The Company denied all of the grievances, leading us to arbitrate the matter. After more than two years, an arbitrator decided in the workers’ favor, citing insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold the dismissals. This was a decision that Chrysler Group does not agree with.
I want you to know that Chrysler Group does not condone, in any way, this type of misconduct, but we’re in the tough spot of having to accept the arbitrator’s decision, just as the Union must when the ruling is in the favor of the Company
We take great pride in the quality and safety of every Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat and SRT vehicle we build, and stand by it. The behavior of these 13 individuals is, in no way, indicative of the more than 27,000 men and women who work very hard, every day to build our cars and trucks.
Chrysler has invested millions to upgrade our manufacturing facilities and methods, through World Class Manufacturing. We take very seriously the fact that our company was given a chance to rebuild itself through the assistance of the federal government and the taxpayers.
I respectfully ask you to look at this situation as an unfortunate aberration and know that Chrysler does not take worker misconduct lightly. We will always pursue the strongest and most appropriate actions when this occurs.
We’re building some wonderful and exciting cars and trucks with the highest degree of quality, safety, performance and styling. I ask you to give us the chance to prove to you that you can trust Chrysler Group products to serve you and your family well, and with confidence. Thanks so much.

As an American I have never purchased a foreign made automobile but be assured that I will never buy another vehicle made by Union workers. American made yes but not union made.

When I learned you had rehired these 13 workers as shown on Fox I decided a new Chrysler was not for me, after all. Such a shame your Company has decided this infraction is not important. I will look into a foreign made car now.

Emilie...we in fact dismissed or suspended all of the workers seen in the story. They were reinstated as a result of the appeal process in the labor agreement. It's a result we disagree with. I hope that helps clear up any misunderstanding.
PL1978 Dec 10, 2012, 7:59 PM
Emilie - didn't you read the story at all? Chrysler had no choice; the UAW forced them to re-hire these guys. It's things like this that reiterate the need for a Right To Work state.
PL1978 Dec 10, 2012, 7:59 PM
Does nothing but reiterate the importance of Right to Work.
toolmaker898 Dec 10, 2012, 7:59 PM
i my be bias about this subject since i work at chrysler but, 13 people not constitute the actions of thousands of workers that are proud of the product they make and stand behind.
LNorfleetJR Dec 11, 2012, 12:02 PM
PL1978- Didnt YOU read the article?? It was an arbitrator brought in between the corporation and the union. The UAW didn't force anybody to be rehired. And you sir are completely lost if you think RTW is a good thing! Wether your state is RTW or not has nothing to do with an arbitrated case. Labor laws are what constitute a wrongful firing.
jernigan2002 Dec 11, 2012, 12:56 PM
I have bought a great many Chrysler products through the years. And although I know that the actions of a few do not represent all, I can't help but wonder how many other workers might be doing the same especially now that they know the union will save them. Rest assured my Chrysler 300 will be replaced by a non-union manufacture. Maybe the drunk and drugs explain some of the problems I've had with your products.
Breeze Dec 11, 2012, 2:14 PM
It is alright to employ people who get drunk and smoke pot...but rest assured that I will NEVER consider ever buying a product made with these workers!!! It just goes to show you how far America has fallen when you re-hired these workers. You DID have a choice to let them go permanently or rehire, so SHAME on you for EVER considering hiring these pathetic, no respect for our american laws, drug and alcohol abusing humans!! I agree with jernigan 2002 that rehiring these morons does explain problems with our workforce in America...God help us!
aries02 Dec 11, 2012, 2:31 PM
Breeze, apparently you can't read, they did not have the choice of permanently letting them go. They had to rehire them by order of the arbitraitor. And shame on you to lump the thousands of employees that work at SHA into the same boat as these 13 idiots.-God help you!!
aries02 Dec 11, 2012, 3:41 PM
jernigan2002-your Chrysler 300 was made in Brampton,Ontario,Canada. So I presume you are lumping every assembly plant into this. Small minded if you ask me.

Sad day for the workers who give their best...all in the same basket...
Unionssuk Dec 11, 2012, 9:59 PM
Wow!,,, unbelievable. I do expect the "arbitrator" to accept any and all blame for any future failings related to possible fatalities as a result of drinking and drugging while on the clock. Leave it to unions to represent the derelict. Chrysler and unions are reaping their just rewards!
PennyCanter Dec 11, 2012, 9:59 PM
As a Chrysler buyer, I feel this really lets me know how Chrysler feels about drinking and driving. If they do not enforce it on their employees then they have no problem with the public drinking and driving nor the safety of their products. I know my family and friends will no longer be buying Chrysler products after this and I will be trading in my Jeep. Most big companies forbid such behavior from anyone in their employment but it would seem the chrysler has no problem with drinking and driving, drinking on the job and the use of drugs while on the job.
aries02 Dec 12, 2012, 7:48 AM
PennyCanter-yes, and apparently you can't read.

What has happen to common sense? What has happen to right and wrong? This was a clear cut case for dismissal. Shame on and any self respecting members of the Union. One good example of why companies move production to places where workers work.
Wkndtech101 Dec 12, 2012, 12:39 PM
I think that if imployees are going to jepordize their jobs, they shouldn't be rehired. What ever happened to the good old Americans aren't we proud of our country and what the American people stand for anymore
MoparJim Dec 12, 2012, 12:39 PM
I have owned mopar products since I could drive. Now looking for another. Will NOT be Mopar this time because of the Union. It is not Chrysler's fault. Chrysler should forward these comments to the union. They are responsible for the loss of customers. 97 Dakota (still runs), 00 Durango (totaled, but saved lives), 04 Ram (sold in 09 because of Obama economy), 10 Jeep Still good (want to sell back to Chrysler after this news.) Always American but now thinking Toyota
wallyman2 Dec 12, 2012, 12:39 PM
All companies have employees who abuse drugs and alcohol. Big ones, small ones, foreign ones, domestic ones and management employees are just as guilty as floor employees. Right to work has nothing to do with any of this. The union didn't force these employees back either, the arbitrator did. These employees have paid a high price for their mistake. As long as these employees are punished when caught that's fine. They shouldn't lose their jobs and the companies have invested in these employees a lot of training that shouldn't be discarded either. These employees should be monitored and allowed to have their jobs after lengthy suspensions and testing. If there is a second incident, then dismissal should be immediate. No one is perfect including management.
wallyman2 Dec 12, 2012, 1:06 PM
I'd also like to remind people that the auto companies with the most recalls the last couple of years are Toyota and Honda. They also have employees with drug and alcohol problems both management and floor workers. No company escapes this unless thay are really small.
Unionssuk Dec 12, 2012, 10:40 PM
Oh Wally.... Really? R we talking about 2 yr olds or adults here? I'm in the medical profession. How many chances should I get to make irresponsible choices that might possibly kill someone? One? Two? Or 3 dead people??! These r adults who made stupid choices in which the union SUPPORTS thru arbitration. Absolutely disgusting!!!! Maybe if RTW were in effect these idiots would work a little harder to keep their jobs ....!!!
missj Dec 13, 2012, 2:39 PM
It is a shame they were reinstated, but I am sure they have learned a lesson and had counseling. The Union gives you the ability to seek help. I worked for years in an office. My bosses took "long" lunches quite often and came back, making decisions that they shouldn't have made after drinking their lunch. This goes on corporate wide, nation wide. We just should keep vigil and remind our fellow workers not to drink. I have always and will always drive Chrysler products. It is a shame their is so much negativity out there.
wallyman2 Dec 13, 2012, 2:39 PM
2 year olds wouldn't be able to read the article or the above comments. Please do. As stated, ALL companies have this problem with drugs and alcohol RTW or not. My management is littered with alcoholics and drug users and they are not in a union. They don't get caught or even penalized the same because they are treated differently. Double standards. RTW has nothing to do with any of that and anyone can be injured, maimed or killed when there is irresponsible adult behavior. The 3 martini lunch isn't what line workers term it! So it applies everywhere. Humans will be human too. You think you can solve alcoholism and drug use? Why haven't you done more then? No, it's not as easy as you think! Good luck!
Judge not Dec 13, 2012, 2:39 PM
I think it's funny that people are following Chrysler workers and seeing them drink or do drugs in EVERY job there is people drink and do drugs they just hide it a lot better people in the office get drinks for lunch . People at other car companies do the same foreign and all. Please stop judging
